A few months ago, I began to experience daily headaches that were characterized by a throbbing pain above my right eyebrow. During one of these episodes, the same area of my forehead is tender if I apply pressure with my fingers. I can sense the onset of these headache by pain that gradually intensifies over the course of a half-hour and feels like a change in pressure. Typically, the headache dissipates after about 1-2 hours if I take one 600-mg dose of ibuprofen.
I've had persistent headaches since my childhood and I'm 30 years now, but I've never had this type of headache where the pain was localized. The headaches that I was accustomed to made my entire head hurt, above and between my eyes, my temples, the back of my head, etc. These headaches would occur as many as a few times a week or not at all, and having become used to them, I often didn't take any pain medication. Usually after a night of sleep the headache was gone.
I'm concerned that this type of headache might be due to a tutor or internal bleeding. Keep in mind that I have 20/20 vision and no history of head trauma apart from one concussion as a child. I have, however, had high blood pressure and high cholesterol for at least the last two years (in the pre-hypertension range). Apart from ibuprofen, and the occasional dose of Excedrin, I do not take any medications. In terms of behavioral changes, I often travel from the US to Europe for business meetings and while working in the US, I often work European hours on weekdays (CET) and adjust to US hours (EDT) on weekends. By nature, I am always mildly anxious and stressed about work.
One last thing to mention is that there have been a few one-week intervals over the past few months where I haven't had any headaches. Just as soon as the headaches would disappear, they would suddenly return. This memorably happened one week when I was in Europe and another week when I was in the US. I hope that this suggests something other than a tumor or internal bleed (e.g. cluster headaches, migraines, etc.).
What is your best guess at what is causing these headaches and what I can do to prevent them?
