what can i do to ease the pain?

Hi

I'm a 21 year old female and I have been suffering from migraines since I was 13 years old. At first I used to get one every week but now I get one every month without fail.

I don't know whats causing them or what to do to stop them. The pain is so unbearable. I usually see zig zags or get a blind spot 10minutes before the migraine starts and then the throbbing pain behind my eyes and on one side of my head will start, my body will go numb on one side, my tongue will also go numb which will result in me being unable to speak constructively or make any sense.I will get nauseous and eventually end up vomiting. I lose my appetite and become very weak and I'm unable to get any sleep because the pain increases when I lay down. the pain will usually last 12 hrs with the numbness slowly disappearing 8hrs after

I have tried painkillers but they do not work because I end up vomiting them out. I've also tried menograine but it doesn't work.

Please can anybody suggest something for me? Sorry for the essay

Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community.

I suggest you see a doctor/specialist as you are having some pretty severe symptoms that probably require some prescription preventative medication. In the meantime here are some over-the-counter tips you can try while waiting to see your doctor and pls keep us posted.

1. There are several symptoms of migraines and what causes the pain of a migraine is the blood vessels in your brain become dilated. So, sometimes it helps it you put a bit of pressure on your head. I am sure you have already been doing this unconsciously with your hands from time to time. So, get a bandanna or a cloth headband and wrap it snugly around your head.
2. If you rub Mentholatum across your forehead and on your temples that helps relax those tense muscles. You can do this with or without the wrap, depending on if you like the heat or not.
3. Try either a cold or hot pack, whichever is more comfy to you.
4. The best OTC meds that I have found that works is Excedrin. It is a combo of Aspirin, Tylenol and Caffeine and that happens to be an excellent combo for migraines.
5. I mentioned caffeine before...well, drink coffee, Mt Dew, take Vivirin...sometimes a mega dose of caffeine will stop it in its tracks.
6. If you get nauseous or dizzy get some Meclizine from the pharmacy (the stuff behind the counter) you can take 25mg three times a day as needed. Yes it works on both.

Hi Shiluva,

I read your question and i understand your concern. First of all you need to try pain-o-soma 500mg because same situation i faced 4 year ago. I hope it will work in your care. But you don't get relief from pain then immediately concern with doctor.

Hi,

I would suggest that you consult a Neurologist.  Pharmacy medication that may help include triptiphans such as a brand named Maxalt MLT.  The MLT is a melt version that disintegrates on the tongue and gets in the system faster.  What may also help is a drug called Zofran it is also available in melt version and gets in the system fast.  The Zofran will help with nausea and sometimes if taken quickly may even abort the migraine without Maxalt.    If you want to try the non pharmacy methods, I would strongly suggest EEG Neurofeedback from a provider using the LENS System.  This method has greatly reduced my wife's migraines which for 18 years were uncontrollable.  Hope this helps you.

Have you ever seen a specialist? There can be a lot of different reasons for what you are describing... if you haven't already, I would tell your doctor about it. I think you need to see a specialist about it and get some tests done to help find out what is going on there.

As for something to help right how, when I get migraines I find putting an ice pack (in its cover) where the pain is until it becomes almost too cold... and then I warm up the area with my hand then repeat with the ice pack. I just keep doing that until the ice pack goes warm. I find it does give some relief. I know some people who have tried Toradol also to help with the pain.

Hope this helps in some way.
