Relief...

I posted this on the PCOS forum as well.  I visited this board several years ago when I first began having problems...they never really stopped I guess, but are just flaring up to an intolerable level again.

I have had problems with ovarian cysts in the past (surgery to remove 2 (4 cm and 7 cm) actually ended up revealing 5 smaller cysts hiding behind the big ones and the beginnings of endo).  Ever since then, my body has not been right.  I get migraines with my cycle, my periods always begin with a disgusting brown, sticky blood and finish with heavy flow and large clots, I hurt constantly all over my body.  I have seen the doctor numerous times and had numerous ultrasounds and pill changes without any major discoveries and/or changes.  I was beginning to believe the doctors when they told me nothing was wrong...until now...

Last weekend I woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain on my left side along with bloating and a lot of tenderness.  I called the dr. on Tuesday and had an ultrasound done on Wednesday (this is the first time I've has the US done this close to pain and exactly midcycle).  The results of the ultrasound showed a small fibroid (found previously...but hasn't changed) and 11 small cysts-5 on my right ovary and 6 on my left. Very small-  .5 cm to be exact.  The doctor wants me to continue on the pill he put me on after my last period (which was painful, heavy, etc.) and I have an appt to see him on May 7th.

So what I am wondering from everyone is can cysts this small really cause pain? Also, I know that small follicles are normal, but is this number normal?  11 seems like a lot to me...  And in your experience (if you have any similarities) what options am I going to be given at this point?  I know with the large cysts he offered wait and see for 2-3 weeks, aspiration or surgery...but what about when they are this small?

I guess I'm relieved that I wasn't imagining things...but frustrated that my body just can't figure itself out!  I HATE this!

Thanks for your reply.  I'm 37.  With the last cysts he gave me 3 options:  wait and see, needle aspiration, or surgery.  However, we were dealing with a 4 cm and 7 cm cyst at that time.  I definitely have pain, and have for quite some time...I hate the waiting game...the waiting and wondering.

The size of a cyst does not necessarily determine how much pain it causes.  Small ones, especially when you put a high volume of them together which then pushes on other organs, can definitely cause pain.  I'm not sure if the quantity has anything to do with PCOS or not and I am not much aware of that disease.  You don't mention how old you are which can determine how you would be treated.
