virus vs, antibodies

I had a PCR done about ten years ago that revealed HSV2 antibodies as well as a small amount of Hep C virus.  I chose to do the 11 month treatment of interferon & ribavarin for the hep and it has been non-detectable ever since.
I have never experienced a herpes outbreak and am wondering if the treatment might have cleared the herpes virus as well?  My doctor says it is possible for people to clear viruses.  I am with a new partner now who test positive for HSV1-2 and we are afraid to have sex for fear of infecting one another with a different strain of HSV2 or her giving me HSV1.  She too is asymptomatic with respect to the HSV2 but does get cold sores on her lips from time to time.
So the ultimate question is what constitutes safe sex in our situation?  Should condoms always be used?  Is oral sex OK and assuming we both do have the HSV2 virus but different strains, will passing the different strain be like getting infected anew?  Thanks for your advice...

Sorry, thought my question was related to herpes...  So I'll try to be more concise...  If both I and my partner have HSV2 is there still a risk of transmitting a different strain of the same virus and causing a new initial outbreak?
