14 year old teen with Blind Spot and Eye Pressure

My son has been diagnosed with overly large nerve endings in his eyes that is causing some pressure (Winter of 2010). He was seen again and tested and it seems that he has developed a blind spot in his right eye (peripheral vision). The eye doctor wants to keep an eye on it. Should I be more concerned? What does this mean for his future and should I be treating him with something now? He is only 14.

Do I discuss this with the eye doctor or a GP? Thank you!

Hi!
It is very difficult to say what the blind spot in peripheral vision means. Apart from the large nerve endings (the cause needs to be investigated), other causes of this blind spot need to be ruled out. This loss of vision in the peripheral visual field can be due to optic nerve damage caused by glaucoma, high internal eye pressure, retinal detachment, occlusion of blood supply as in eye stroke, optic neuritis, and optic nerve edema. Tunnel vision is also possible after a history of head injury, concussion, brain damage and stroke, though all these causes may not be applicable in your son's case. Do discuss this with your son's doctor. Take care!
