Phimosis in Toddlers

My son has been diagnosed with phimosis. He is 22 months old. The hole at the tip of his foreskin is only open about the size of a pin. He is in great pain when he urinates. His penis balloon's up and then he is able to go, but runs around the house crying and holding himself for quite a while before he will void. Putting him in the bath seems to be the only way to 'make" him go, but it is still very painful. We went to the emergency on Friday and had his urine tested for infection and it did come back negative. They perscribed for him a betamethasone ointment to use for 1 month and then said if he wasn't better that we would have to circumcize. My question after all of this is does anyone have any insight as to how long he will have the painful urination??? Besides that, he really has no symptoms. I have no issues with trying the cream for a month, but I don't know if I can stand seeing him in pain for that long! The ER doc said he had no idea....which doesn't help much. I'm not asking for an exact date, but should I see results a few days or a couple of weeks later or will this last the whole month??

Thank you to anyone who can give me any kind of information. I appreciate it.

Hello,

Phimosis is a constriction of the opening of the foreskin so that it cannot be drawn back over the tip of the penis. This condition is a normal occurrence in the newborn boy, but over time the skin that adheres to the tip of the penis can be retracted as the foreskin loosens. Phimosis can also occur if the foreskin is forced back before it is ready. This can cause a fibrous scar to form, which may prevent future retraction of the foreskin.

Treatment includes application of a steroid cream to the foreskin up to three times a day for about a month to loosen the adhesive ring.If ballooning during micturition is present, then surgical removal of all or part of the foreskin(circumcision) may be recommended.

As your son is having painful urination,so unless the phimosis is treated,he will have painful urination. If the steroids creams don’t make him any better then pls consult a urologist and discuss the option of circumcision with him.

I hope it helps.Take care and regards.

I was wondering. How come the foreskin is not still attached to the glans? Toddlers his age should not balloon because it should still be attached.   Betamethasone ointment is given to make the foreskin stretch, yes.   If the foreskin is not attached, I would be asking questions why.  Did someone do this to your child?  Forcing it back will cause permanent damage.  I was sexually molested at a very young age and it caused permanent damage to me.
