From the positive nitrites and the burning sensation, it definitely sounds like you may have a urinary tract infection.

Unfortunately, sometimes the sample is not properly collected or stored, so by the time it gets to the Microbiology lab, nothing grows. For example, the urine sample SHOULD NOT be refrigerated, and yet, often it is in doctors' offices.

I would suggest you return to the doctor, confirm you continue to suffer from the same symptoms, and ask that a second sample be sent to the lab. Better still, ask for the urine container and the requisition for the lab, collect the sample at home and drop it off at the lab as soon as possible after collecting it.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Microscopic hematuria can be due to urinary tract (bladder) infection, swelling in the filtering system of the kidneys ,stone in bladder or in a kidney, blood disease, like sickle cell anemia, certain medicines and tumors in the urinary tract.
You may need a series of investigations like urine examination, urine culture, ultrasound or cystoscopy to confirm the diagnosis. Please consult a urologist and get it done.
I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
