Am 73 year old female with history of excision of benign cyst in 1975, normal mammograms every 1-2 years since then. Had needle biopsy today and should have results within 5 days. Recent sonogram revealed birad category 04 "irregular hypoechoic solid mass at 12:00 position." Please interpret finding, and explain percentage risk of this being a malignancy. I've already been advised by the radiologist to see a surgeon for an opinion.
Dear Grace524: An irregular hypoechoic solid mass means that the mass is not perfectly round, is solid (hypoechoic means that sound waves will not pass through). BIRAD 4 means suspicious for cancer and that a biopsy is recommended. Depending on the source you read and radiologist categorization, the risk of a BIRAD 4 being malignant is between 25% and 50%.
