Fibroadenoma

by wuhanmom, Nov 30, 2007 09:25AM
I am a forty-nine year old woman with a strong family history of breast cancer and a personal history of atypical ductal hyperplasia.  I have had annual MRIs since age 43.  This year MRI showed a new 13x14 mm nodule that on core biopsy was a fibroadenoma.  Given my age and history, should this lesion be surgically excised?  If so, for what reason?

Dear wuhanmom:  Fibroadenomas are non-malignant (benign) lumps that feel smooth, and round. They can vary from very small to quite large (5cm). Fibroadenomas are usually distinct on a mammogram and ultrasound. They are most common in women in their teens and early 20's but can happen at any age. If the size is stable and the fibroadenoma is not bothering the woman - there may be no reason to remove it.   Since the biopsy has confirmed the diagnosis, the only reason to remove this is if there is any doubt about the pathology or if you are uncomfortable with it being there.  You may benefit from having this discussion with your doctor.
