For Femara & The other breast side

My mom had mastectomy on the left breast for a invasive ductal-lobular carcinoma in 2001 at her 50th years old. The tumor was 3*3*1cm, 2 of 5 for the axillary lymph node dissection, ER(+), PR(+), C-erb-2(-). She had gone through chemotherapy (6 times with 5-Fu, Methotrexate and Cyclophosphamide), then radiation (after 2nd-time chemo, and for 25 days) in the same year. She also had the TAH-BSO (the removal of both uterus and ovaries) in 2003, because her uterine fibroma still kept the same since she has been post-menopausal after the completion of 2-time chemos. For hormone therapy, she completed 5-year of tamoxifen treatment (2001-2006) and now has being taken Femara for 23 months. Her latest exams of CEA and CA153 are normal and current E2=5. However, there are some breast nodules in her right side. But she feels nothing special about that. So my questions are: 1. Is there any specific exam or treatment she should have for the right breast? 2. Should she keep taking Femara? And for how long? Thanks a lot!!!

Dear xaiojing:  Follow up for the remaining breast after cancer is generally annual mammogram and clinical breast examination.  Additional testing, such as ultrasound or MRI might be recommended at the discretion of the physician if there is anything of concern.  In general, aromatase inhibitors are continued for 5 years.
