Genetic risk for breast cancer

Genetic risk for breast cancer

My mom just loss her battle with breat cancer. She was 60 yrs old when diagnosed and fought the cancer for 7 years. Her final diagnosis was Triple Negative Metastatic Breast Cancer. She started with a micro lump and then was diagnosed with inflammatory Breast Cancer then it spread to other organs. I have been told they feel her cancer was hormone induced from hormone replacement therapy but I am concerned it could be genetic. Do you recommend I have the BRAC test? I am 45 years old.

Dear bridget:  Most hereditary breast cancer occurs in the premenopausal years and occurs in multiple family members.  However, since you are concerned, you may benefit from a visit with a genetic counselor who can assess your risk and help you determine if genetic counseling would be right for you.
