Warning bracelet after removal of lymph nodes

by Lil, Jun 05, 2001 12:00AM
My friend recently had a lumpectomy and 2 lymph nodes were removed for testing.  The lymph nodes were clear.  In the hospital her wore a bracelet stating that no blood pressur, blood samples, etc. could been done on this arm. During her first visit to the doctor's office he removed the bracelet.  My friend is of the opinion that she must order a medic alert bracelet and wear it for the rest of her life.  Is this necessary or is precaution limited to a period of time?

Dear lil, The reason for avoiding these procedures is to try to prevent lymphedema.  Lymphedema is an abnormal build-up of fluid that causes swelling in the arm.  Lymphedema can develop when lymph nodes are removed.   It is a difficult condition to treat once it develops so prevention is the key.  Recommendations such as avoiding blood draws or blood pressure checks on the side of the surgery are suggestions to help prevent lymphedema from occurring.

For more comprehensive information about lymphedema prevention and treatment we have information on our Cleveland Clinic Website. Which is www.clevelandclinic.org once there, click on Health Information Center, then type in lymphedema.
