benign focal asymmetry?

benign focal asymmetry?

I had my annual mammo and a follow up on the left breast.  I am 41.  I received a copy of the report and its findings are:

""the previously noted asymmetry demonstartes near complete effacement on the spot compression view.  I suspectthis is related to a benign focal asymmetry, as a similar density is noted onlast year's exam.
Impression:  Probably benign focal asymmetry within the left breast.
Assessment Category:  3-probably benign finding.  Suggest 6 month follow up.

WHat does this all mean?  I tried calling my Dr but was put thru to a RN who semed confused why I would question the results and was annoyed the radiologist did not speak to me instead of me calling their office. Should I take the initiatiative and have the films reviewed by a breast surgeon (she did dsay this was me perogative) or is it customary to wait the 6 months for follow up?   I just want to do everything I should be doing.....Thanks

Dear Judy1098, The interpretation by the radiologist is that this area is a benign (non-cancerous) finding, as a similar finding was seen on the last year's examination. A category 3 assessment refers to a rating system (BIRADS scale) used by radiologists to categorize findings on a mammogram. The scale runs from 1 to 5. 1 being nothing to comment on. Routine screening. to 5 being highly suggestive of malignancy. A BIRAD 3 means that according to the radiologist, this is probably a benign finding and short interval followup is generally recommended (usually 6 months).

You may want to contact the radiologist to have them review with you their findings.  If you are still concerned and are not getting your concerns addressed adequately you could always seek a second opinion.  The doctor providing a second opinion would would want to see the films (this film as well as previous films for comparison).
