Dear farout:  In general, genetic testing is discussed when there is high risk of breast cancer, based on family history.  In this case, family history usually refers to first degree relatives (mother, sister, daughter).  Most often genetic testing is done on the person/people with cancer first to see if the gene is present.  Only then, would the test be offered to relevant family members.  The advantage for folks with a genetic breast cancer may be the option to have preventative bilateral mastectomy.  There may also be insurance issues.  This is an area that should be discussed in detail before proceeding. Your history is likely not strong enough but you could discuss your risk with a genetic counselor who could give you recommendatios based on your history.
