have to have chemo?

have to have chemo?

I was dx with bc on 10/7.  Path report stated mixed IDC/ILC.  My sentinal node bx was neg. and my margins were clean, the tumor measured 1.3cm.  I don't have ER/PR status back yet.  I am premenopausal, 42yo.  There is no family hx of bc, but both parents had cancer, father with non-hodgkins lymphoma, and mother with renal cell.  I go to the oncologist 10/20.  Are there any instances where chemo is not used, especially if hormone receptors are positive. Also, I can find little info on mixed IDC/ILC treatment.  Is it the same as either alone?

Dear Amyjrn, The current recommendation for adjuvant treatment for breast cancer (treatment given after surgery to try to prevent or minimize the growth of microscopic deposits of tumor cells that might grow into a recurrent tumor) using chemotherapy, is that it be recommended in cases of tumors larger than 1 cm in size, regardless of the lymph node status, menopausal status or hormone receptor status.  This is because data has shown an overall survival advantage with the use of adjuvant chemotherapy.  There might be instances where it would not be recommended, such as a pre-existing medical condition that would increase the risk of chemotherapy.  Decisions about use of adjuvant hormone therapy are based on the hormone receptor status of the tumor.  Invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma would be treated the same.
