Long term side effects of medicines

Long term side effects of medicines

I am 47 years old and have been suffering from IBS for the last 25 years. I am always constipated and had in the earlier years taken lots of laxatives too. Since the last 10 years or so, i am somehow surviving on 50 gms of Psyllium Husk and 20 mg of Domperidone everynight. Not that is am out of trouble but this is the minimum that i must take to survive....Kindly advise if there can be any long term side effects of this life long medical treatment and, if yes, what alternatives do i have. Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hi,
Both psyllium and domperidone are relatively safe medications and they do not cause any serious side effect on long term use.
Polyethylene glycol is another option available. Though this has not been approved for treating constipation predominant IBS, it is very commonly presribed and has been found to be useful.
