intermittent pain under and behind ear

I have been having intermittent (sometimes every few minutes, sometimes hours) pain under, and
behind, my right ear.  Can this be a symptom of a clogged carotid artery or some other vein problem?
My mother had a stint put in her carotid artery when she was just a little bit older that me.
