dilantin and insomnia

Hello. I have been on Dilantin for abou 9 years now, for seizures. No irregular EEG patterns ever noted.

In the last 3 years I have become insomniac, to where I now wake almost hourly. I also have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. So I am not sure if the insomnia is from which.

Does anyone else have any experience with this problem?

Thanks.

Hi,

How are you? Insomnia may be due to a lot of factors which may include: stress, anxiety, depression; stimulants, change in the environment or work schedule; long-term use of sleep medications certain medications, or behavioral in nature.  Insomnia also becomes more prevalent with age. Changes in sleep patterns, activity, or in health may also influence this. It would help if you have this evaluated further to determine the underlying cause and for proper management.

Hypothyroidism may present with  early symptoms such as cold intolerance, depression, fatigue, joint or muscle pain, thin and brittle hair/fingernails,  or weakness. These could have exacerbated your insomnia.

Take care and regards.
