genital herpes and now oral??

I was diagnosed in 2001 w/ genital herpes.  I have never had an outbreak since the inital (which was very viralent).  I developed my first cold sore today (confirmed by my MD w/ cultures pending).  I have never had a cold sore in my life, and I am 30.  Is this a newly acquires HSV infection?  I have had no genital outbreak since the first, so I can't see how the two are related.  I am really confused w/all this talk about type 1 or 2?  How could this just suddenly happen to me now?  I have been with the same partner since the beginning of all of this, and he never gets cold sores.  He also only experienced a 1 genital herpes breakout and it was after my initial episode.

I hope somehow this can be explained, becuase I am confused.
