just got a phone call

Hi Everyone -

I just got a phone call from an ex-girlfriend whom i had unprotected sex with New Year's Eve.  Since we broke up, she was with another guy who called her this morning and told her that he was diagnosed with genital herpes.  What are the chances that I will contract it?  She said she hasn't had a breakout yet, which I guess is good.  Is herpes only contractable when one of the people has a breakout or is is contractable at any time?

For starters, you don't even know if your girlfriend has herpes or not. Has she been tested? What about you? Do you even know if you have it and contracted it prior to this event?

Nobody can tell you what the "chances" are of contracting it. Generally speaking, your risk is low. (Since it was unprotected sex, your risk is 5% over the course of sexual relations over a YEAR. That means your risk during any one episode of sex is extremely low.)

Herpes is not "contractable" any time (but love the neologism). Read up on how and when it's transmitted so you have a better understanding of it.
