To Steriod or not to Steroid??

To Steriod or not to Steroid??

I am not quite clear on the exact purpose of Solumedrol treatments. I read the health pages and I still don't get it.
I have a definite worsening of symptoms that has occured over the last couple of months.

Basically my legs have gotten weaker and more spastic and my vision issues (no positive ON) are coming and going more frequently. Oh and the Fatigue...how could I leave that out?

I do not necessarily think this is an "attack" persay, but I go to the neuro Monday morning and he tends to recommend steroids with any worsening symptoms.

My question is, are steriods only supposed to be used to calm an attack, or does the use of steriods sometimes calm symptoms of MS??

So basically, would it be a good idea to try steriods and see if my fatigue and spasticity improve or am I kidding myself there??

thanks

An attack and symptoms of MS are really the same thing, but if you mean ongoing stuff vs. something new, I see what you're saying.

The symptoms don't have to be new and acute to get steroid intervention. If they're worsening, that should be enough. This should be a judgment call between you and your neuro. Steroids could well help. But be aware there's a downside too. Steroids can cause weight gain, sleeplessness and other effects. As they reduce inflammation, they can also knock down your immune system and leave you more open to infection (all while you're taking them and immediately thereafter). Frequent use of IV steroids can lead to osteoporosis over time.

You should really discuss this thoroughly with your doctor. Find out his philosophy on this, all things considered, and make your decision after that. If you're not comfortable with this, find another neuro. This is an important consideration that probably will be repeated, so you need to feel right with whatever you decide.

Best wishes,
ess
