Soy-based nutritional supplements intolerance

Soy-based nutritional supplements intolerance

Hello,
My Mom is a 73 year old who in May 2007 had a gastric feeding tube inserted into her stomach. After about 6 months of using Jevity 1.0 followed by Jevity 1.5(calories) she becan to have gas, a nauseus feeling which is constant but increases after her feeding. She has prolonged spells of diahhrea and constipation, and recently has begun to vomit approximately 2 hours after her evening feeding. She suffers hot flushes and weakness periodically. Tests have been done to determine if there is leakage out of the opening into abdominal cavity, and for ulcers. Both negative. The docs are mystified, and have sent her to a psychologist, thinking perhaps a psychosematic(sp) case. I live with her and take care of her, and I am quite sure that this is not the case. I thought perhaps she has developed an intolerance to these soy-based supplements, and her doc was going to check with a nutritionist. My Mom suffers from Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy, and all nutrion must come through the tube. She is holding at 94 lbs., after increasing graduallly from 76 lbs. at the time of surgery.   Any information or guidance that you can point me to would be deeplu appreciated, as she is almost to the point of taking herself off the feeding tube and let the end come. This is part of her living will.   Thank You.

Jevity has fiber, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and prebiotics (good bacteria) to help with movement of the bowels. Some people cannot tolerate that type of fiber or large amounts of it. Suggest going back to Jevity 1.0 and see if she tolerates it as she did before. If the MD wants a higher calorie formula (1.5) then suggest a 1.5 non-fiber formula, such as Osmolite 1.5. If constipation occurs then use Benefiber to help with it. Hope this helped you.
