Chest tightness and pain

by Crystal Mama, Jul 27, 2002 12:00AM
I'm experiencing chest heaviness & pain similar to what I've felt when with bronchitus (bronchitis). Difference this time is that it's been the same for about 2 months now, with just a slight worsening of symptoms, except when I take several deep breaths, it really hurts for a few minutes. Have had several bouts of severe bronchitus (bronchitis), as well as pnuemonia (pneumonia). Currently have no other symptoms, such as tiredness, weakness, dizziness, coughing or noticable wheezing--just this chest tightness and pain. Have studied symptoms for several of the respiratory disorders mentioned in this site, & it seems that I could be experiencing one of them and will indeed get it checked.  Question first ... about 2 yrs ago, I had back surgery at L4-L5 for a ruptured disc--lots of sciatic pain, nerve damage to my right foot and weakness in the right leg.  Surgery fixed the problem, except the sciatica--now I have chronic pain when I sit and it gets worse if I sit for long periods, such as travel or working (desk job). Recently had an MRI, which shows another herniated disc and scar tissue, which they think is possibly causing continued sciatica. Had a cortisone shot, which helped for a while, but the sciatica is back with a vengenance. Can't have another shot for 3 more months. Currently take 2-3 Vicodin a day and force myself to tolerate the pain, because it helps, but never quite takes it totally away, and I don't want to become any more addicted to this stuff.  Question--is this chest pain possibly linked to the Vicodin, or is it truly some sort of respiratory problem?

You should assume that the chest pain is not due to the disc disease, sciatica or the Vicodin.  It could, however, be caused by disease in your vertebral column, with nerve compression, which is unrelated to the disc disease causing your sciatica.

The chest pain could be due to a problem within your chest, respiratory or non-respiratory.  You should have an evaluation of your heart and lungs.
