Fluid in ear and dizziness

by khr3, Feb 15, 2006 12:00AM
I have been experiencing dizziness and pressure headaches in my forehead for a couple of years.  A year ago a mri revealed sinus inflammation and a polyp in my maxillary sinus about the size of a quarter.  A year ago the doctor also noticed fluid in my left ear the same side of the sinus polyp.  This year the doctor noticed white bubbly fluid in my left ear.  Could the dizziness and fluid be related to the polyp.  Should it be removed.  Thank you.

The polyp, by itself, should not cause problems.  Lots of people have polyps in their sinuses.  However, if the polyp blocks the opening of the sinus, then fluid and/or pressure can occur and cause other problems, such as headaches and an infection.  The size and location of the polyp are the essential issues related to whether these are causing you problems.  Surgery to remove the polyp may be suggested.  However it is common for the polyp to grow back.  I would suggest discussing this with an ENT specialist.

It’s common to be treated with medicine before surgery is considered.  A prescription nasal steroid spray can shrink a polyp over time.  A nasal steroid spray does not provide immediate relief of symptoms.  It may need to be used every day for several weeks to months to notice improvement in your symptoms.  A nasal wash helps remove mucus from your nose and sinuses.  It is most helpful when done daily before using any nasal spray.  Please read our nasal wash treatment information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/treatments/alt-ther/nasal-wash.aspx to learn more about this technique.  Share this information with your doctor to see if you would benefit from this daily treatment.
