was dx with emphysematous changes and told this could possibly  heal if I quit smoking. On re-visit I was told that I have stable emphysema. DX determined via chest xray. Any thoughts as to the dx I was given? Any insigth or direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

Any emphysema you now have is permanent and irreversible, but if the diagnosis is correct, you must stop smoking.  That you already have emphysema is a definite sign that your lungs are sensitive to the harmful effects of cigarette smoke.  Smoking cessation is the only thing that will halt the progression of emphysema.  Certain x-ray findings can suggest emphysema but do not give information about your lung function.  To get that information, you should have pulmonary function testing.  Also, if you have an occupation that exposes you to fumes, dust, smoke, dust or toxins, you should quit and switch to an occupation that allows you to breathe clean air while on the job.

To: all interested
have physical scheduled 11/25/08 w/ my internist. don't feel sob - when I inhale (good deep breath) and then exhale it feels like I'm expelling well. Can anyone tell me my prognosis if I have early or mild emphysema ?

My mom was diagnosed w/ emphysema about 1994 and lived until 12-31-06. It got real bad the last year. she was in the hospital 3 times - includes the last time. She fought for 4 days at the end before passing on. She had a living will because she didn't want to be kept alive if/when there was no hope. In other words, she didn't want to be butchered. I feel the same way, although, I might not have the same fate as she did.

One very important thing I have forgotten to mention, but most important is that I quit cold turkey 9-7-08 upon receiving dx.

Another question, mentioned in previous post was that quitting smoking can halt progression. I didn't think anything could halt the progression?

If so, please explain. Thanks for all the insight and in welcoming me on board. I plan to enjoy this journey!
