Hi,
It is true that ofloxacin is more effective than ciprofloxacin in treating chlamydial infections of the genital tract. However, the increasing reports of drug resistance seen in chlamydia to ofloxacin indicate that treatment with this antibiotic may not result in cure of chlamydial infection.
The appropriate dose of ofloxacin for treatment of chlamydial infection is 300 mg twice daily for 7 days. But, treatment for infections of the prostate will need to be continued longer in view of the poor penetrability of antibiotics into the prostate.
Just check which organism is causing the infection so that specific treatment can be carried out.
Thankyou doctor. Well, today i have repeated the ultrasound, and my prostrate comes normal. After taking Tosufloxacin for 2-3 days, i start to have some pain in my back, and i consulted another urologist who has put me again on ofloxacin for 7-10 days.
I read on the internet that Ofloxacin can deal with Chlamidyia and other STDs. Is it correct ?
Hi,
Tosufloxacin is supposed to have more efficacy and a broader spectrum of action in infections. This should be more effective than ofloxacin in the treatment of prostatitis. However, some organisms like chlamydia are only weakly sensitive to this class of drugs and will need specific testing to identify the right antibiotic.
You may need to have another urinalysis done, preferably from a sample collected just after ejaculation. A prostate fluid analysis can also be done. This is to identify the organism causing the infection and may be followed by a culture sensitivity test to determine which antibiotic the organism is sensitive to. A prostate ultrasound (done rectally) will give an idea of the state of the gland and whether it is enlarged.
Antibiotic therapy is prescribed for long durations in prostate infections in view of the poor permeability of the prostate gland to antibiotics. The course will be for about 15-21 days and may even be for a few weeks.
Ensure that you keep your fluid intake over 2000 ml per day and avoid irritants, such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods. Also avoid sitting for long periods of time or on surfaces that are not well padded.
If you do indulge in intercourse during the period of treatment, ensure that you practise safe sex (condoms) so as to not infect or be infected by your partner.
