Alcohol withdrawal & the effect of current Adderall(adderrall) prescription

by mrMikey, Oct 16, 2008 02:35PM
I have been on Adderall (adderrall) XR 15mg daily for just over 1 year now.  I have also been drinking alcohol on a pretty regular daily basis for about 2 to 3 years.  In the recent few months or so, my alcohol consumption was at about 6 or 7 days of the week, and normally around 7 ounces of whiskey each night, sometimes 2 or three times the amount (maybe once or twice a week), and sometimes as little as 4 or 5 ounces of whiskey (maybe once or twice a week).  I quit drinking 'cold turkey' 6 days ago; and on the 4th day I started to realize some definite alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

My main question is, should I quit taking my adderall (adderrall) until the alcohol withdrawal symptoms reside?  The more I read about it, it kind of seems that alcohol withdrawal does some similar things to my CNS (central nervous system) that my adderall (adderrall) does & I am worried about 'doubling up' how extra aware my nervous system feels and seems these past few days.

My wife asked me to describe how I was feeling, so even though it may not totally make sense, this is what I said: "It feels as if my heart is working extra hard to pump blood to my body and it feels like my body can't handle the blood because it feels different than normal, so my heart continues to work harder to get more blood there even though it doesn't seem to change the way my body feels yet.  I am light headed, a little dizzy, very weak, and agitated."  I told her all of this before I realized the feeling was from alcohol withrawal. I had never read anything about it before.  But as I explained to her how I felt, a light bulb went on in my head helping me remember the only physical thing I have really changed in the past week was drinking, so I started reading about it online.

Most of my questions are answered, but please answer me these things:
1 - should I quit taking adderall (adderrall) for a while
2 - should I go in and see a medical professional or should I be okay if I continue to not drink alcohol?

Thank you so much for your help, I truly appreciate it.
