I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to help a 13 year old boy that is suffering from bipolar disorder. last week he had an outbreak where he was really trying to hurt people in his family, mainly his mother because she did not let him go play with his friends until he finished his chores. He had to be restrained by his therapist and stepfather. the parents don't want to put him on medication because it causes depression in him as well as lack of motivation for anything. any advice would be very helpful.
I would have him see a child psychiatrist who is a qualified specialist. There are many options as regards medications and generally mood stabilizers don't cause depression and not all cause cognitive side effects. We have some websites linked up for information. You can find out more about available options and then speak to the psychiatrist about it.
