what are the purposes of umbilical cord dressing? can you help me?

Since there are many variations to taking care of an umbilical stump, you should follow the instructions that were given to you in the hospital at the time your baby was born.  In general, keeping the umbilical cord stump clean and dry will allow it to fall off in the normal period of time (between 1 - 3 weeks).  Keep the front of the diaper folded down so that it doesn't cover the umbilical stump, and change diapers soon after they become wet or soiled.

The umbilical stump can be washed with soapy water using a clean cloth or wipe, then patted dry.  In general, there is no need to use rubbing alcohol unless you are instructed to do so by your pediatrician.  Your baby should be seen immediately if you notice any signs of infection around the umbilical stump, such as swelling or redness of the skin around the stump, or a foul-smelling discharge.
