Do I have adrenal failure?

by fitzgraphics, Sep 22, 2009 03:20AM
I have had little energy, little appetite, and runny stools for some time now.
Recently, my lower legs, ankles and feet will swell (quite severely) if I'm up late working and get fewer than 6 hours of sleep. (I'm a graphic designer who's stuck in front of a computer and sitting for hours on end.)
My right eye keeps getting a blurry spot in the middle of my vision, and when I would go to the eye doctor, it always disappears and they say my vision is perfect.
I always try to get some sun, so my skin has a healthy tan, so I wouldn't know if I had darker skin that was referred to in "symptoms of adrenal failure" on previous links I've been to.
I'm sensitive to gluten, so when I consume any, my gut cramps up and is very uncomfortable. The following day, in between my toes will blister and peel - so I try to avoid it as much as possible, but sometimes I can't resist, so I suffer. (Thought I'd mention that, for what ever it's worth.) I also cramp up with certain coffees and soy.
I had my blood tested when I saw a doctor regarding my symptoms mentioned on my opening first line (above), but they said there was nothing to raise any concern about.
Could I be suffering from adrenal gland failure?
Is there anything I should specifically have my doctor test me for?
I'm 43 years old and eat really healthy. Maybe I'm missing something in my diet?

Thank you in advance for your reply.
Sincerely,
Christy

Hi Christy,
How are you? Adrenal insufficiency or failure occurs when the adrenals do not produce adequate amounts of steroid hormones. It usually presents with  hypoglycemia, dehydration, weight loss, disorientation, weakness, tiredness, dizziness, low blood pressure, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These problems may develop gradually and insidiously. Diagnosis is through blood examination. Cortisol, ACTH, aldosterone, renin, potassium and sodium are tested from a blood sample before the ACTH stimulation test needs to be performed. X-rays or CT of the adrenals may also be done.Take care and do keep us posted.
