Could I......?

by BipolarBabe, Apr 23, 2009 02:45PM
when i was little i would sometimes not breathe for a while while sleeping because my tonsils and adnoids were so big.  Since then I have had many mental health diagnoses such as OCD and Bipolar.  I was wondering if lack of oxygen to my brain when I was a child could have cause this?

Thank you

Not that I am aware of. There are disabilities that can be caused by lack of oxygen (but usually while the fetus is in development) but they are generally neurological or developmental such as cerebral palsy. There are a lot of studies and findings regarding psychiatric disabilities such as bipolar and ocd and they basically tend to concur that its genetic but that emotional traumatic events can sometimes hasten their onset. We have some websites linked up with information on mood disorders that might explain it in more detail.
