blood in semen and urin

I recenty had a biopsy done for prostate cancer. Everything is ok except that I still have blood in my semen and urin. My urin was clear 2 days after but now when I frist start it is rasberry looking and if you don't look you'd never tell it. I understand that the semen will carry blood for 11-12 wks but I'm a bit concerend with the urin. Is everything ok or should I go see my uroligest again? Sorry for the spelling.

Hi Mac749
Blood in the urine (hematuria) after prostate biopsy occurs in many patients. There is a normal variation with some people having frank blood tinged urine while others dont have any blood at all. It can also range from just 1 blood tinged voiding to persistent hematurria for a few days.

From what you have indicated it seems to be clearing.

I am of course assuming that you do not have any bleeding tendencies. Are you on blood thinners (Aspirin etc) for a heart condition? If not:

I could suggest some home remedies: if you have not been advised to restrict fluids because of any other medical condition (heart, liver, kidney failure etc), then increasing fluid intake with the aim of increasing urine output helps.

If the hematuria persists- then a urine culture to rule out an infection and if there is one- it needs to be treated.

If the hematuria persists even after this: a review would be required. Some investigations (eg sonogram to rule out any clots), your bleeding and clotting parameters and very rarely (possibly) a cystoscopy maybe indicated depending on the individual case.

These are some quick remedies I can think of. Of course there is no substitute for a review by your treating Urologist
