hypothyroidism and irregular periods

by mom2quint, Feb 25, 2008 08:40PM
I'm 26 and have been on Synthroid for about 5 years now.  I have just recently started having really irregular periods the past 3-4 months.  Spotting almost every week, then never knowing when I"m going to start.  Usually I start around the 4th-7th of each month, well last month I spotted the 7th and 8th and then had a full blown period on the 22nd.  My husband and I are trying to conceive and I'm not sure when I'm ovulating because my period is so irregular.  My doctor checked my TSH and it was normal 1.62 or something like that.  So I'm just curious if anyone else has had the same problems and what you've done about it.  thanks!

I had a similar experiences.  I had a TT due to Graves in May '06.  The fall of '06, my period went totally missing for about 3 months, then came back and was somewhat regular.  In November '07 I had 3 complete menstrual cycles, 2 in December, and back to normal for Jan and Feb.

I mentioned the first instance to my OB-Gyn at my annual checkup last spring.  She said it is not uncommon for menstrual cycles to go out of whack with thyroid problems.  In the middle of my 2 instance, I called the endo because I thought maybe my levels were off.  Waited 5 weeks for an appointment, waited 4 more weeks to get the results  except for the thyroid levels which were in the next day and were fine.  Since I am in my mid-40s, the endo did estrogen, FSH, prolactin, etc, (thinking maybe pre-menopause?) but all came back normal (wonder if they would have been normal had the blood been taken back when I had 5 periods in 2 months!).  Sure glad I wasn't sick.  So, I don't really know what caused it, just have to wait and see what happens in March.  I am going to mention it to my OB-Gyn again when I go in April and maybe have a look at the test results anyway.

So, to answer your question, yes, it has happened to me.  But, nobody can tell my why, except that it isn't my thyroid levels.  Oh well!  Sorry to vent on your post, but at least you know you aren't alone.  Have you tried calling your doctor?
